Oklahoma Prevention NEeds Assessment Survey

The Oklahoma Prevention Needs Assessment Survey (OPNA) is a biennial survey of public, private, and charter school students in the 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th grades. The survey is a project of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS), and has been conducted in Oklahoma since 2004.

Miami Public Schools is conducting the OPNA for students in grades 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th from February 20-22, 2024. The goal is to understand student behaviors and beliefs to shape prevention programs for alcohol, drugs, mental health, and other issues. It’s entirely anonymous and confidential. Students won’t be identified, and results will only be shown in groups.

The survey covers various topics anonymously, like thoughts on school fights, available community activities, or drug use. Participation is voluntary, and your child can skip any question.

Here are some example questions from the survey:

  • How wrong do you think it is for someone your age to pick a fight with someone at school?
  • Which of the following activities for people your age are available in your community?
  • On how many occasions (if any) have you used marijuana in the past 30 days?
  • Do you share your thoughts and feelings with at least one of your parents/guardians?”

If you are not comfortable with your student taking the survey, you can opt-out by completing the “Declining Participation Form” available below.
