Miami Public Schools is committed to creating safe, supportive learning environments where every student has the opportunity to be successful. One way we are strengthening that commitment is through our districtwide implementation of BIST — Behavior Intervention Support Team practices.
This year, all MPS teachers and staff have completed three full days of BIST training. This training gives our staff common language, strategies, and tools to help students manage behavior, develop problem-solving skills, and remain connected to learning.
What does BIST look like in our schools?
BIST is more than responding when a student misbehaves. It focuses on teaching students the skills they need to be successful. Staff work to build strong relationships, establish consistent expectations, provide proactive support, and help students process situations when challenges occur.
Processing is an important part of this work. Instead of focusing only on consequences, staff help students reflect on what happened, identify what they were feeling or needing, and develop a plan for making a different choice in the future.
Throughout our schools, families may also see additional supports such as calm-down spaces, behavior interventionists, behavior support paraprofessionals, increased student check-ins, and additional support on buses and throughout our buildings.
Our Commitment Continues
Our three days of districtwide training were only the beginning. Miami Public Schools will continue investing in BIST throughout the school year and beyond. Staff and administrators will receive continued support through:
- Ongoing BIST consultations
- Leadership training
- Virtual training opportunities
- Continued coaching and implementation support
Our goal is consistency across classrooms and buildings so students know what to expect and have adults equipped to help them succeed.
BIST isn’t about expecting students to never struggle. It’s about teaching them what to do when they do.
Together, we are working to create calmer classrooms, stronger relationships, better choices, and more time for learning.
