A new law passed in Oklahoma—HB3913 (codified as 70 O.S. § 24-28)—requires all public schools to implement a bell-to-bell ban on student use of personal electronic devices during the instructional day, unless authorized for educational purposes. This includes cell phones, smart watches, earbuds, and other similar devices.

In response, Miami Public Schools has updated our policy to reflect these new requirements. Starting this school year, students will not be permitted to use personal electronic devices from the first bell to the last bell, unless a staff member specifically authorizes their use for instructional reasons.

This change is aimed at reducing distractions, improving engagement, and creating a more focused learning environment for all students.

The full policy, FNG – Personal Electronic Devices, outlines expectations, exceptions, and consequences and will be shared during back-to-school meetings. Please take time to review it and be ready to help support consistent implementation across all sites.

This is a significant shift for schools across the state, and your support in helping communicate and uphold the policy is greatly appreciated.
